DES and Public-key Cryptography
Here is an article entitled "Encryption Methods." It was published in PC Tech Journal in May 1985 (the journal went out of business in 1988).
The two main topics in the article are the Data Encryption Standard and Public Key Cryptography. In 1985 DES was recently adopted and a leading edge encryption technology. It remains widely used but advances in computing power have brought it closer within reach of successful cryptanalytic attack. Several other algorithms have appeared since 1985. Argument and debate over their relative strengths and merit are always popular.
While the information in the article about both DES and public-key cryptography may be old, it is not dated. The descriptions are accurate and the observations apt.
